Guide

How to measure a window

Approximate sizes are enough for a price estimate. For a more accurate quote, measure the opening like this.

  1. Measure the width in three places

At the top, middle and bottom, from one side of the opening to the other. Write down the smallest value.

  2. Measure the height in three places

At the left side, the middle and the right side, from the bottom of the opening to the top. Again, take the smallest value.

  3. Enter the opening size in the calculator

We deduct the installation gap for foam (usually 15–20 mm on each side) ourselves, so you do not need to recalculate anything.

  4. If the opening is not straight, note it

If the opening is uneven or rebated, also give the frame size of the old window in the note. Our specialist measures everything on site before production.

Comparison

Kömmerling, Rehau, Aluplast and Wital profiles

The profile is the frame and sash of the window. It determines how warm the window is, how thick the glazing can be and how well it blocks noise. We work with four profile systems.

Profile systemMade inInstallation depthChambers (frame / sash)SealsUf, W/m²KMax. glazing
Kömmerling 70Germany70 mm52≤ 1,244 mm
Rehau Synego MDGermany80 mm7 / 63, centre seal1,0351 mm
Aluplast Intertec 85Germany85 mm7 / 63, centre sealnot stated51 mm
Wital Prestige Therm 86Poland86 mm63not stated48 mm

Data from manufacturer and distributor technical sheets. Uf is the thermal transmittance of the profile: the lower the number, the warmer the frame. For the Aluplast Intertec 85 window, Uw down to 0.76 W/m²K is stated.

Kömmerling 70

German system with a 70 mm profile and 5 chambers. The slimmest of our profiles, well suited to openings in standard-series buildings where space is limited.

Rehau Synego MD

German system with an 80 mm profile, 7 chambers and three seals. Good thermal and sound insulation for city flats and private houses.

Aluplast Intertec 85

German system with an 85 mm profile, 7 chambers and a centre seal. Suits private houses where warmth matters most.

Wital Prestige Therm 86

System from the Polish manufacturer Wital with an 86 mm profile, 6 chambers and three seals. Wital profiles have been made in Gołdap since 2006.

Opening types

How windows open

In the drawings, the tip of the triangle points to the handle and a dashed line means tilt.

Tilt and turn

The sash opens fully or tilts at the top for ventilation. The most popular choice for living rooms.

Side-hung

The sash only opens sideways, like a door. Suitable if you do not need tilting.

Tilt only

The sash tilts inwards at the top. Often used for transoms and bathrooms.

Fixed

The window does not open. The cheapest and warmest option, but the outside can only be cleaned from outside.

Glazing

2 or 3 panes?

3 panes

Warmer and better at blocking street noise. In the Latvian climate we recommend it for most living spaces.

2 panes

Lighter and cheaper. Suits unheated or rarely heated rooms, such as summer houses and outbuildings.

Special glass

Tempered glass is stronger on impact, laminated glass stays in place if broken, and frosted glass blocks the view, for example in a bathroom.

FAQ

Questions and answers

Why does the calculator not show a price straight away?

The price of a window depends on the profile, glazing, colour, hardware and installation conditions. Rather than promise a rough price that changes later, we calculate a quote for your exact configuration.

How quickly will I receive a quote?

On working days, usually within a few hours. If anything needs clarifying, we will call you.

What if I do not know the exact size?

Enter approximate sizes and choose "Approximate, measuring needed" in the form. Our specialist measures everything on site before production.

Which profile should I choose?

For a flat with a narrow opening, the Kömmerling 70 mm profile is often enough. If warmth and noise insulation matter, choose an 80–86 mm profile with three seals: Rehau Synego MD, Aluplast Intertec 85 or Wital Prestige Therm 86. If in doubt, choose "Not sure, advise me".

Can I order windows in non-standard shapes?

Yes, we also make arched, trapezoid and triangular windows. Mention them in your message or attach a sketch and we will get in touch.

Will the quote include installation?

If you tick removal and installation in the form, we will include them in the quote.

Where can I see window samples?

Window samples are on display at T/C Damme, Kurzemes prospekts 1a, on weekdays from 8.00 to 17.00.
